GDD’s Experience Design Team was approached by Havells India to work in tandem with their in-house team to create a new smart control experience inside their Havells Sync app for their new product - a smart air purifier using their newest and most advanced technology and made using premium materials. This was to be one of the first product under their newly formed brand, Havells Studio. Our core design team included a design director, a design lead, one project manager and 2 other designers.
Our goal was to design a premium experience for their new product inside their “one stop solution’ app without breaking their already existing framework, showcase the smart capabilities of the product without overwhelming the user and make it easier for users to utilise their smart automation feature for consistent clean air.
We had zero idea about the product and brand so, we conducted workshops with the stakeholders to better understand the positioning of the brand, the business, the importance and focus on the new product line etc. We understood the capabilities of the product and new features. Since, our sister concern design the physical product, we understood their reasoning for certain decisions.
On the other hand we studied the user personas to understand who would buy such a premium product for cleaner air, where are they from and what motivates them to opt for such a product.
Equipped with the knowledge, we collected during our previous stage, we started conceptualising interactive models for the new smart control page. Our focus of this exercise was to achieve two goals:
1. Design a system that is cohesive with their existing smart control framework so that users do not feel alienated
2. Design a system to that keeps the user informed about their current air quality and allow users to take quick measure and even automate air cleaning with minimum interference.
After multiple iterations, we went ahead with a tab based approach where the information and actions are divided into three categories/tabs.
Info tab : This is the default tab which displays the core air quality stats like PM levels and AQI level, warnings and notifications and Filter quality.
The control tab : This is where the user can manually increase or decrease the fan speed or set it on various modes.
Timer tab : This tab allows users to set a time for upto 12 hours.
We designed three visual approaches for Havells Meditate. Each one of them took inspiration form the main colour palette of the logo and infused it with a sleek new look that focused on unique control interactions. After a lot of discussion, we went ahead with a dark theme to match the brand aesthetics and to differentiate it as a premium brand from the rest of the Havells brands.
We reused their default components and worked on creating a design system to implement the dark premium theme. This helped the dev team to incorporate things faster without having to create components from scratch.
We designed micro-animations to elevate the interaction experience without slowing the user down. We also, designed the content structure and trigger & conditions for the push notifications.
Our work didn't end when the we handed the final designs to the development team. We worked closely with them to realise our designs as close to the final UI. We created prototypes to show interaction models and flows. We created charts to better convey trigger conditions and patterns for various notifications and designed content for faster and easy communication of alerts.
The product launch was successful. Many reviewers commented and remarked about the premium app experience for the product. Many enjoyed the smart features of the product and ease of using them. In 2023 we received a nomination for the IF design awards and led us to win the Red Dot award.
