Free Online Courses and Nanodegree Programs

With digital disruption, the education sector has seen a major paradigm shift. Online courses have been on the rise and prevailing catering to people of all ages and experiences. Udacity is one such platform offering an array of Technology related courses with several subscription payment models to suit any type of consumer. A community based learning with Nanodegree Certifications on completion with the ability to learn at one's own pace sitting at the comfort of a home has led to many users signing up to such platforms for upskilling.

Online courses are gaining popularity with 58% of students reporting they have taken an online course, motivated primarily by being able to take the class on their own time (63%), not having to physically be in a class (48%) and being able to learn at their own pace (47%).

Problem statement

Udacity came to us with a core problem that the purpose of the platform was not very clear for the users. It was identified that there was no particular flow through which a user would navigate themselves to the platform. In addition, the platform offered an array of courses for beginners as well as experts, this meant that each page had to be treated individually but as a part of the whole platform creating a sensible flow of information in place.

According to a report by KPMG and Google, the online education market in India is expected to grow to $2 billion by 2021. This represents a significant increase from the $247 million market size in 2016.

Design solution

We created a streamlined user flow that allowed users to easily navigate through the platform. We structured the platform so that each page could be treated individually but still be part of a cohesive whole. This ensured that users could easily find the information they were looking for and move seamlessly through the platform. We created separate landing pages for each audience, with relevant course offerings highlighted on each page. This helped users find the courses that were most relevant to their skill level and interests, while also creating a sensible flow of information across the platform.We worked closely with Udacity US Team to ensure that our design solution met guidelines.
